Have a beachy time but do not forget safety!

Spending time on a beach lined with white sand and clear blue water is the best possible therapy! Beach time is well-spent with your little ones running around or having a stroll with your loved one or just spending some relaxed time by yourselves listening to the sound of the waves. Irrespective of that, your personal safety is what you should never overlook when on the beach! Follow these safety tips and you are good to go!

  • Do not forget to bring a sunblock with you to avoid getting a nasty tan. I also prefer to carry an umbrella to shield myself from the sun and its UV rays.
  • Avoid wearing fancy shoes to the beach. Do not wear flip-flops or beach slippers. Wear hard-soled sports shoes that will protect your feet from litter, small stinging animals, seaweed and hookworm larvae and also to save you from slipping in mud.
  • Carry a polythene bag to carry your shoes thus also ensuring that you do not take sand particles back to your car.
  • There are lifeguards on every beach whom you can reach out to in event of any emergency. It is advisable not to venture out to any beach during the monsoons.
  • You should make sure you are a good swimmer and that you are aware of the water current if you want to go for a dip in the sea. You should swim in the areas marked safe for swimming. Also avoid swimming in secluded areas as those areas are more difficult to reach in case one needs help.
  • Do not forget to also carry 2-3 bottles of water with you while packing for the beach.
  • Watch out for jellyfish, sea urchins and hydroids as their bite can be painful. Stonefish, stingrays and yellow lipped sea kraits are also harmful and can be fatal.
