Vietnam Travel Guide – Everything you Need to Know

Vietnam, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, storied history, and vibrant culture, stands as an enchanting destination for travelers. From dynamic urban hubs to tranquil rural vistas, Vietnam presents a wide spectrum of experiences catering to adventure enthusiasts, history aficionados, and culinary connoisseurs alike.

Vietnam is my favourite South Asian destination, and I am sure, if you give it time, and soak in the charm of the different cities, experiment with new flavours, try out the delicacies, know more about its history, it’ll become one of your favourite travel destinations too.

This all-encompassing Vietnam travel guide will dive into various aspects of planning your trip, encompassing must-visit destinations, activities to engage in, the best time to explore Vietnam, practical travel advice, and more. Join us on this journey as we share all there is to know about visiting Vietnam.

According to me, Vietnam is one of the most traveller friendly destinations in South East Asia, and one can just explore the heart of different cities, on foot, with a mobile in hand. To make it easier, I would recommend you do the Hop On Hop Off Tourist Bus Ride in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, on the Day 1. This will help you better associate with the city, and ease out on the city exploration in the following days.

1. Visa and Entry Requirements

Indian Passport Holders are eligible for an eVisa.

There are plenty of fake  evisa websites, and it’s very easy to fall for a scam.

Here is the main website where you need to go and fill your details to get an eVisa –

Time taken to fill application – 5-10 minutes

Time taken for eVisa approval – 3-5 working days

In order to avoid any hiccups, we recommend applying for the Vietnam eVisa at least 2-3 weeks in advance. And once you receive it, make sure to check if all details are proper.

2. Best Time to Visit Vietnam

The best time to explore Vietnam is contingent on the climatic conditions in various regions. Vietnam experiences pronounced monsoon seasons characterized by heavy rainfall, flooding, and mudslides.

For a great trip, plan to visit Vietnam between December and February, which is generally the best time. However, keep in mind that the southern region, like Ho Chi Minh City, has a hot and humid tropical climate throughout the year. To escape the sweltering heat, December to February provides a welcome respite, marked by lower humidity and pleasant high-20s temperatures.

Conversely, in northern areas such as Hanoi and Sapa, a distinct winter season occurs. December and January usher in mid- to high-teen temperatures in Hanoi, and this period occasionally witnessed snowfall in Sapa.

For those seeking beach adventures in Da Nang or exploring the charming town of Hoi An, the ideal window falls between February and May. During these months, both air and water temperatures hover around 20°C, creating ideal conditions for beach activities. It is advisable to steer clear of Da Nang during the rainy season, especially in September and October, when frequent heavy rainfall and powerful coastal windstorms can disrupt plans.

By taking into account Vietnam’s diverse climatic patterns and the best time to travel to Vietnam, travelers can carefully plan their journeys, ensuring comfort and a seamless and enjoyable experience in this captivating nation.

Having said that, one can travel to Vietnam all year long. It’s usually best to avoid the months of August – September/October.

3. Getting Around Vietnam

Vietnam boasts a well-established transportation network, facilitating seamless travel within the country. Here are the main ways to get around during Vietnam tours.

  1. Domestic Flights: When embarking on long journeys, domestic flights emerge as the swiftest and most convenient choice. Major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hue are seamlessly connected through air travel.
  2. Trains: Vietnam’s railway system is expansive and provides an enchanting mode of travel, particularly when journeying along the North-South Reunification Express. Trains come in a variety of comfort levels and speeds, necessitating thorough research and informed booking decisions.
  3. Buses: For budget-conscious travelers, buses offer the most economical means of traversing Vietnam. An array of bus options is available, ranging from luxurious sleeper buses to basic local services.
  4. Scooters and Motorbikes: In many urban centers and towns, renting a scooter or motorbike is a popular and flexible mode of transportation. However, it’s imperative to exercise caution due to traffic and road conditions.
  5. Taxis and Ride-Sharing: Taxis and ride-sharing services are easily accessible in most urban areas, providing a convenient mode of city transportation.

We recommend booking Bus or Train  Tickets for your Vietnam Trip on 12Go.asia . It’s the Go to Travel Website for Travelling in South East Asia.

If you are a backpacker, and have got time at hand, I would recommend you to do the North to South or Vice Versa, Hop On Hop Off Bus Service from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City ( or Vice Versa). It’s a relatively cheap mode of exploring the interiors of Vietnam.

4. Top Destinations in Vietnam

A Vietnam travel guide is incomplete without knowing some of the must-visit destinations. Here are the top places in Vietnam that you should travel to.

a. Hanoi

The capital city of Vietnam, Hanoi, is a bustling metropolis that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, and will either be the first or last stop on your Vietnam Itinerary, depending on your travel plan – North to South or vice versa. Don’t miss the Old Quarter with its narrow streets, historical architecture, and vibrant street markets. Key attractions include Hoan Kiem Lake, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the Temple of Literature, which are some of the Best Things to do in Hanoi.

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its breathtaking limestone karst formations, and a must visit destination during your Vietnam trip. A cruise on the emerald waters of Halong Bay is an experience of a lifetime. Enjoy activities like kayaking, exploring caves, and swimming in the bay’s clear waters.

For a better experience, I would recommend you to visit Lanha Bay. You get a similar, but a better experience, and it’s relatively less crowded. Here’s everything you need to know about taking a Trip to Lanha Bay.

c. Hoi An

Hoi An is a charming coastal town known for its well-preserved ancient town, lantern-lit streets, and tailor shops. Explore the historic architecture, sample local cuisine, and take a cooking class. The things that will stand out when you visit Hoi An, will be the Day Trip to BaNa Hills, the coconut basket boat ride, and the self paced exploration of Lantern Street and Hoi An Old Town.

d. Hue

Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, is steeped in history. Visit the Imperial City, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and explore the ancient citadel’s palaces, temples, and gates. The Perfume River and its dragon boats are a must-see.

e. Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, is a bustling economic and cultural hub. Visit the War Remnants Museum, Cu Chi Tunnels, and Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon, which are some of the Best Things to do in Ho Chi Minh City. The city’s street food scene is a culinary delight, and we highly recommend you to do a Food Tour in Saigon, as these tours are unique, and provide an immersive experience into the local flood culture.

The Mekong Delta offers a glimpse into rural life in Vietnam. Take a boat trip through the winding waterways, visit floating markets, and enjoy the serene countryside. A trip to Mekong Delta is best combined with a Day Trip to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels, near Saigon.

5. Cultural Experiences

Vietnam’s rich culture is influenced by Confucianism, Buddhism, and local traditions. Don’t miss the opportunity to:

Attend a Water Puppet Show: Water puppetry is a traditional art form unique to Vietnam. Shows are performed in a water pool, and the puppets are controlled by puppeteers hidden behind a screen.

Explore Temples and Pagodas: Vietnam is home to numerous temples and pagodas that reflect its spiritual and architectural heritage. Tran Quoc Pagoda in Hanoi and the Marble Mountains in Da Nang are just a couple of examples.

Participate in Local Festivals: Depending on your travel dates, you might have the chance to witness and participate in local festivals. Tet Nguyen Dan, the Lunar New Year, is the most important and widely celebrated festival in Vietnam.

Learn About the War History: Vietnam’s history is deeply marked by the Vietnam War. Visiting sites like the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City and the Cu Chi Tunnels provides insight into this historical period.

6. Cuisine and Street Food

Vietnamese cuisine is renowned for its fresh ingredients and vibrant flavors. Don’t leave Vietnam without trying these dishes:

Pho: A fragrant and flavorful noodle soup that’s a Vietnamese staple.

Banh Mi: A delicious sandwich with various fillings like grilled pork, meatballs, or tofu.

Goi Cuon: Fresh spring rolls filled with shrimp, herbs, and vermicelli noodles, served with dipping sauce.

Bun Cha: Grilled pork served with noodles and fresh herbs.

Vietnam’s street food is some of the best in the world, and you can find it almost anywhere you go. Embrace the local dining experience by eating at street stalls and markets.

7. Accommodation

Vietnam offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit different budgets. From luxury hotels and resorts to budget-friendly hostels and guesthouses, you’ll find something that suits your needs. Booking in advance is recommended during peak tourist seasons.
